Senegal's Sinomach-designed wrestling arena combines culture with innovation

2025-08-18In Senegal, wrestling is more than a sport – it's a cherished tradition that is often referred to as the "national essence".
In 2014, China IPPR International Engineering Co, a subsidiary of Sinomach, undertook the ambitious task of designing a modern, large-scale wrestling arena in Dakar.

During the design phase, the team collaborated closely with local architects and wrestlers to better understand the cultural significance of wrestling in the region. Recognizing that traditional wrestling competitions emphasize performance, the team incorporated a dedicated performance area, a national performance ramp, and modern sound and light control systems, along with live broadcast capabilities. The design was optimized for safety and convenience, catering for both athletes and spectators passionate about the sport.
In the project's initial stages, IPPR was responsible for feasibility studies, surveys and design tasks. During discussions with local stakeholders, a disagreement arose regarding the orientation of the stadium's entrance. After careful research and analysis, the design team proposed a solution that gained approval from Senegalese experts and the government. The final design features U-shaped stands combined with an arched canopy, symbolizing the golden belt awarded in wrestling championships.

To celebrate Senegal's national spirit, the team also designed a 310-meter-long, 4-meter-high relief wall at the top of the stands, with local artists contributing to the design. This was realized using advanced GRC technology, resulting in a stunning artistic display.
The wrestling arena, covering approximately 7.5 hectares with a total construction area of about 18,000 square meters, can accommodate 20,000 spectators. Its steel structure awning, at 50.46 meters high and spanning 206 meters, resembles a champion's gold belt, making it the largest steel structure project in Africa at the time of construction.

Since its opening, the arena has become a favorite venue for the people of Senegal. In May of this year, it successfully hosted the Senegal 2024 Wrestling Championship, drawing a capacity crowd of 20,000 spectators.
